Differences between STM32 and SPC5

Goodmorning

   I'm a newcomer to the microcontrollers of the ST. Until now I have only done some small project with the STM32 family.

In these days I'm starting a new project, a control board for a high power outdoor lighthouse, and since the requirements are similar to those automotive (temperature and vibration) I was taking a look at the SPC5 family.

Since I'm relatively a beginner, I wanted to ask what are the advantages (and disadvantages) of using the SPC5 family instead of the STM32, and whether the SPC5 family is right for my application or if it's better to use the STM32.

Someone can help me choose between SPC5 and STM32.

Hello Federico ,

Honestly, the two families are perfect for your application :

• SPC5 has a powerpc core (32 Bits), you can use SPC5Studio with Free Toolchain for that. (and automotive grade)
• STM32 has a arm core (32 Bits), you can use STM32 Tools set with Free Toolchain (gcc arm)

   About form-factor for prototyping :

STM32 Kits have a nice Nucleo FormFactor in order to create easily your prototype (with arduino shield), and less expensive.

The Discovery kits form factor are different except 58.

  In term of community point of view ,

STM32 has a greater mass-market community comparing SPC5 one. Community support will be maybe better.

  In term of certifications ,

STM32 is SIL Ready

SPC5 are ASIL-B and ASIL-D (SPC56P/L/S) not the SPC56B

if you have to choose between STM32 or SPC5 for your application.

Maybe, STM32 is convenient for your application ;)
