Clarification on VL53L5CX Sensor: When to Use “With Liner” vs “Without Liner” Version

Hi All,
I see two order codes for the VL53L5CX:

• VL53L5CXV0GC/1 (with liner)

• VL53L5CXV9GC/1 (without liner)

The datasheet says the liner must be removed before mounting the cover glass, but it’s not clear when the liner version is required.
Could anyone of you clarify the purpose of the liner and when to choose the with liner version instead of without liner for standard PCB assembly?

Hello 

The purpose of the liner is mainly to protect the sensor from dust during the assembly in the customer environment. This liner is not mandatory, and that's why we are proposing a version without liner.

If you want to use a non-liner version of the sensor, there is a specific technical note giving some guidelines for the assembly : TN1532

Thank you for the clarification.

In our design, we plan to place a protective cover glass in front of the sensor. Based on this, it should be possible for us to use the sensor without the liner, as the glass will provide protection against dust and particles during assembly and operation.

Please confirm if this approach is acceptable for the sensor’s performance.

The liner just helps during assembly- one cannot run with it in place. So, check with your manufacturer. If he can build boards according to Tech note TN1532 above, then using the non-liner version is possible.

But the liner is just there to make things easier to assemble. 

Then just rip it off just before assembling your structure. Then the cover glass will protect the sensor.
