Question

ST202EB ST232: Can V+ be connected to GND via capacitor (as MAX232 devices)?

I'd like to use the ST202/ST232 as a drop in replacement for MAX202/MAX232 devices.

In my design, the V+ output is connected to GND (via capacitor) as suggested in the datasheet

https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/max232.pdf

Whereas the ST datasheet

https://www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/st202eb.pdf

has V+ output connect to VCC (via capacitor).

Does the ST202/ST232 also allow for V+ to be connected to GND (via capacitor) or is is better to adhere to the application example? In other words, can I use the ST device as a drop in replacement or do I have to redesign?

Thanks a lot.

Dan

Received an answer from ST support:

"We confirm the ST component can be used. Connection of C3 to GND or VCC doesn’t impact the behavior."

C3 is the capacitor connected to V+ according to ST's datasheet.
