VL53L1X People count

Dear Supporter

We make a design using the "VL53L1X" for people counting applications.

To test it, we placed it above the entrance of a room (as in the YouTube link "People Counting Using a Single ST Time-of-Flight Sensor" posted by ST Microelectronics). It works well, but it gives a miss count. When we tested it regularly and we noticed it didn't count the person wearing dark clothes especially black and dark blue, and the sensor took it into account if the same person was wearing a small white cloth on his head.

Our suspicion is that this sensor is not working in black color. How to fix this problem and are there any other way?

Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L1X uses ST’s latest generation ToF technology which allows absolute distance measurement whatever the target color and reflectance.

A black object absorbs all wavelengths of light and reflects none and that's why it appears black. Consequently, black absorbs the most heat.

Perhaps if there is some way to invert the colors, it would be an interesting way to detect the color black:

Alternatively, you might find it easier to invert the image first so that you are trying to extract white pixels. This could lead to less confusion with the pixels you want to extract being similar to the mask pixel
