powerStep01: implementing hardstop

Dear Madam/Sir,

We are using powerStep01 and must implement motor "hardstop" purely in hardware (no software intervention).

We consider these options:

- using the external switch SW and bit SW-MODE = 0;

- OR, with all voltages externally supplied, cut off VS (externally to the controller) while all the other voltages are still active (generated from another rail). Does this damage the controller? If not, does this continues to allow access to internal registers via SPI?

- OR, with all voltages internally supplied, cut off VS externally to the controller.

Please advise pros and cons of the above solutions. Thank you!
