How does the accelerometer auto-calibration work? Would it not require the precise orientation of the sensor in the gravitational field?

The accelerometer calibration requires to keep the device stationary in at least 6 different orientations well spread in the 3D space, but no predetermined orientations specifically. X-axis up, x-axis down, y-axis up, y-axis down, z-axis up, z-axis down are easy-to-remember and optimally-spread orientations, but they are not required for the calibration to succeed.
