How to stream FIFO data?

I'm using the STEVAL-MKI109v3 demo board with the STEVAL-MKI193 IMU. I'd like to evaluate use of the FIFO. I've written a custom PC application based on the Unico Lite demo application. I can read from the FIFO registers properly, but it is really slow. It takes 2-3 seconds to read the entire 3k FIFO. How do I read the FIFO faster?

I've notice the "STMicroelectronics Virtual COM Port" driver defaults 9600bps. This could be the problem.
