I am using the LSM6DSMTR in my project. I did purchase the LSM6DSMTR for two different sources and notice that the marking on the device is different. LSM6DSMTR_Board 1 has: SF 938, does not work. LSM6DSMTR_Board 2 has: SO 108, works great.

I am not using these parts myself, so not sure if the exact model can be queried via WHO_AM_I registers, or other settings/behaviours.

Can you quantify "not work" in a more specific manner, and perhaps dump registers? On these, and perhaps on devices you did your initial development/testing on.
