We're trying to get some LIS3MDL parts for some sample boards we are making. Seems there is no supply anywhere. Does anyone know what the problem is, or when it's likely to be sorted? Better still: any ideas where I can get say 5 of these sensors ASAP?

We are also facing no stock of this part LIS3MDL. I sent question on when this part will be available with distributors to ST support but I have not got any reply yet.

I contacted ST support and they told me the LIS3MDL is 'obsolete.'  But then I asked about the LIS3MDLTR and they said that it was 'active.'  I took from that exchange that will not be using trays and will only be supplying them in tape and reel. Fine.  But that does not explain why the parts are not available.

Mouser says the 'Facory Lead-Time: 26 weeks' and adds '

Manufacturing delays have been reported on this product.'

    with

Digikey says to call, but then they have no information.

Other distributors have similar statements/lack of statements..

Update:  I head back from ST support and they state: '

LIS3MDLTR is in a growth production stage.  The lead time is the correct date.  We do not know the expected due date for these parts.'

Nick - are you after samples or volume?

The difference is only in packaging.

    LIS3MDL is packaged in Tray.

LIS3MDLTR is packaged in Tape and reel.

Problem typically is that when you get stupid lead times like this is that it is very easy for anyone using the part in any real volume to speculatively buy available stock to hedge against delays and volume spikes.

    Any updates on this?

The first time I made a prototype batch, a couple months ago, the manufacturer had some difficulties to source them.

I'm about to make a second batch and DigiKey and Mouser do not have them.

Mouser has >65K on order (some people likely have back orders against that at reel levels driving that number), with initial shipments mid November 2017, going to people in the queue they have built.

If you plan on using these, get an order against this part now, cancel it later if things change, but unless you're in line the 20-26 week lead is something you need to figure into your planning, or pay a significant premium to those doing arbitrage. Never assume 5-6 month lead times are a joke, the semi industry has heavily pivoted to build-to-order, and unless you're doing monster volume you're not likely to see preferential treatment.

The warning has been there 20+ weeks, assume they can sell everything they can build. ie struggling to build enough, not struggling to build
