VL6180X and VL53L0X (Pololu) reliably sense to 0.5 to 1mm. Goal: sense changes to 0.001inch / 0.025mm for measuring table movement of small lathes/mills.

Is there a TOF sensor product / software solution that can obtain 0.001inch measurement precision?

A round trip of 1mm uses 6.7 pico seconds. And a pico second as you know is one millionth of one millionth of a second. And the vl53 sensors are only a few dollars.

As much as I'd love the sensor to have accuracy that good, it just isn't going to work.

I'm afraid for your application a dial indicator is still the best way to go.
