What is the best setting for VL6180x with a narrow, black target?

I am measuring on black targets from two differnent distances.

1. 34mm (real target distance) with VL6180x 18-34mm
2. 7mm (real target distance) with VL6180x 9-17mm

The sensor is calibrated and in interrupt mode.

Every time I measure, I take 10 measurements and calculate the average.

How can I improve this?

I am using the STM API, my settings for the measurement are the following:

UpscaleSetScaling: 1

MaxConvergenceTime: 12

InterMeasurePeriod: 0

I tried several combinations, but had no success.
