Compare TVS for IEC 61000-4-5 with SM30TY

Hello, I would like to use in my design the Transil TVS STIEC45-28ACS and SM30T33CAY as the similar parts. One will be the second source for another. My question is: whether I can use one instead other and what are the difference's between them? Both will be used for transient protection accordingly IEC 61000-4-5 for 8/20 pulse with the peak current 500 ADC. What part is better: with more current as SM30TY or with less voltage drop out as STIEC45?

Hello, you're right both part-numbers are very similar (same Vbr range, same package,...). You can use both if your application respects the maximum values given in both datasheets. The better part-number is linked to your priority parameter. For Ipp capability, SM30T33AY will be better and for better Vcl @ Ipp = 500 A, the best choice is STIEC45-28AS  with 49 V @ 500 A, to compare at 54.8 V @ 500 A with SM30T33AY (with formula 3:
