I am trying to design a laser driver using the L7980A

I am trying to use the L7980A as a current driver for a laser diode. The laser operates with 1.65A at 8.7v. I am aware that the laser needs to carefully controlled, to avoid over-voltage killing the diode. I'm using eDesignSuite, but the design gives no details as to the power-up characteristics.

Anyone have any ideas? I have a feeling it will be OK, but I don't want to kill a laser diode to find out.
