Looking for information about upscaling implementation in display devices

I have been looking for information about how video upscaling is handled by TVs and videoprojectors, because I would like to add features to devices in this domain.

I recently read on an internet forum that upscaling techniques were only mastered by a few laboratories, one being Faroudja, a company which is now part of STMicroelectronics.

Is it true that STMicroelectronics produces chips handling video upscaling for the TV/videoprojector industry?

If so, how wide is this production? Is it only for a few brands, many, or all of them?
