    Follow-up observation:

    I have tried physically shorting the 32K RTC crystal to generate an artificial RTC failure (I needed to test new code that was added to deal with the earlier loss of RTC).  The results are perplexing.  My RTC fails ... permanently.  I suspect I am overdriving the drive circuit on the STR9 chip (probably the inverter).  Not quite the result I expected.
