What are the general rules designing capacitive sensor pads for ST25R3916?

Pad sizes and shapes, pad to pad distance, pad to gnd distance etc.

Is this correct:

If I need more detection distance, I increase the distance between the electrodes and increase the area, more the parallel length, of the electrodes to compensate decreasing of the coupling capacitance when distance is increasing.
