Is it legal to implement DESFIRE support on ST25 chip?

Hi,

We are using ST25R3911B IC in our product and I would like to know if there are any legal issues if we are implementing DESFIRE support on this chip (as it belongs to NXP)? Support guy from NXP told us if we want to support DESFIRE we should use a chip from them, is it true? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

    I fear you will not be able to get a fully satisfying/binding answer here. For this you are better off consulting with your legal department. Some hints:

    • "The MIFARE DESFire ICs are based on open global standards for both air interface and cryptographic methods, ...." (https://www.mifare.net/en/products/chip-card-ics/mifare-desfire/)
    • Of course NXP will try to sell you also one of their reader chips
    • ST is not selling the software for the ST25 chips so ST is not likely to provide binding legal counsel for software using the ST25 chips.
