X-CUBE-DISPLAY fails on NUCLEO-G071RB + X-NUCLEO-GFX01M2: "failed to erase memory"

I have a NUCLEO -G071RB board with an X-NUCLEO-GFX01M2 display shield, and am trying to run the X-CUBE-DISPLAY demonstration software GFX01M2_HelloWorld.  I have imported the project to CubeIDE and built it OK, but when I try to run it I get an error "failed to erase memory" (details attached).  This happens with CubeIDE 1.15.1 and also with 1.17.0.

Running the example GPIO_IOToggle on the G071RB board loads and runs OK, the problem is only with the GFX01M2 demonstrator.

Am I missing something or am I looking at a board faulty out of the box?

    Yes I was missing something.

The GFX01M2 was plugged in back to front, which would appear to be fatal to it.

    How embarrassing.
