What prevents quality audio with sampling frequencies higher 96 kHz with the STM32L476RG and the CCA02M2?

When I increase the sampling rate past 96 kHz, I notice the audio output via the demo usb program behaves as if it has been decimated or through a "bitcrusher" type sound.
