I have an STM32MP157-DK1 and want to update the standard distribution with gcc, g++ and other packages. How is that done?

STM32MP1 distribution is base on OpenEmbed/Yocto.

You have to use Yocto to add needed package.

Did you have a look to https://wiki.st.com/stm32mpu ?

You may find useful information on software offer and way to customize it.
