Why is the "import cmake project" feature missing in the pre-release version?

Without this feature, you can't generate task files and launch files with one click like before to handle code downloading and debugging. Now you have to write the configurations yourself—it's just way too much hassle!

    About launch this one is auto generated if pushing Run & Debug button but not stored.
    You can ask to "create a launch file" if you want to get it. It allows then much more options and control over your debug session. Tips: once .json open let's play with editor completion features ... a bit of teasing about done within this extension walkthrough
