Where to find how i read analog values?

Hello,
it frustrates me that i don't find the information i need to read an analog value from a temperature sensor. I only have the overall documentation file, which's ADC-part is 1/4 page, and a documentation dedicated to ADC, but even this file only tells me what each register does but it doesn't tell me WHAT i have to write into these registers to do smth. Please help! Atmel did its homework and wrote everything clearly and structured in one single document (at least with the AVRs) so that even beginners. like me, understand what they have to do.
