Replies are being eaten?

I am 100% sure I replied to this thread:

https://community.st.com/t5/stm32-mcu-products/do-not-use-hal-spi-transmit-for-high-performance-dma-may-not-be/m-p/570578#M217483

As evidence, I am "subscribed" to it and get notified of new posts, which happens only if you reply, or if you click the subscribe button which I never do.

However, when I go to that page, I don't see my contribution anywhere in that thread. Am I missing something? Do replies get eaten occasionally?

@waclawek.jan Any ideas or similar experiences?

I've been logged out automatically when creating a post, and it errors when I try to submit. Swear I've had to copy the content so I don't lose it.

    Hello @Tesla DeLorean,

Sorry to hear this! In order to report to IT, can you share further details?

    • Does the automated logout happen every time and on different browsers?
    • Does it happen when posting a reply as well as when posting a new question?
    • Do you get any error notifications?

    Thanks,
    Amelie

Okay, that would explain the situation. I don't see what in my post would look like spam. Several sentences long, no links.

It's frustrating when a contribution just disappears like that, with no notification even to me. I'm left here questioning my sanity.

    Maybe?

I am constantly trying to figure out which the threads I was answering recently are, and together with fighting the automatic reload in FF just to be able to make a couple of posts it takes up so much of my energy, that if some of my replies got lost I probably wouldn't even notice at this point.

[deleted lengthy rant, trying to be positive]

There is some sort of autosave, but I am not sure upon what stimulus does it save. I've been offered surprising chunks of half-written posts in the past.

    This post?

I attest I haven't seen it there yesterday, even when reading KnarfB's reply to my post.

Also, @KnarfB would most probably reply to it or mention it, would he've seen it there yesterday.

Yes, @waclawek.jan I can confirm that I didn't see @TDK s reply before yours and my reply.

Oh c'mon, do you (and all ST) really need to be told AGAIN that LOGIN TIMEOUTS as such ARE BAD, BAD, BAD?

Okay, so thanks to this thread being replied recently, I was able to remember one case when my reply got lost: I posted there a test, just putting there those two filenames, and that just disappeared, without any notification.

To be sure, I now repeated the test, here's the proof of post:

    waclawekjan_0-1688026851974.png

with my offending post at the end, and this is how the thread looks after reload:

    waclawekjan_1-1688026998008.png

So, what I guess happened with TDK's post is, that it got automatically censored; and then somebody manually restored it after TDK complained here.

Thanks for the responses and trying to duplicate. The new forum certainly has some teething problems. At least the title-only posts have been eliminated, I guess?

I did notice at one point that I was logged out for no reason and had to log back in to make a post. Not sure what problem a login timeout would be trying to solve. Shrug.

    Hello @TDK ,

I am sorry to hear about this! I have adjusted the timeout settings from 30min to 45min. Please let me know if you will face the issue again and on what circumstances.

    Thanks,
    Lina

I can confirm I am experiencing the same problem too. This needs to be fixed asap as people can think that their reply are not being recorded, making them post the same thing again and thus when the system is trying to avoid spam, it's creating unintentional spams from users.

45 *days* of *inactivity* timeout would be about adequate.

There is no reason whatsoever to log out from the forum for active users, the need to log in is a nag significantly reducing its usability.

    Hello @TDK  and @waclawek.jan ,

Thanks for your inputs. I get your frustration on this one. To limit the time of inactivity is advised for security reasons. Currently I can push it to the maximum of 200 minutes and investigate what is the next best possible extension.

I'd say leave people who ask or answer questions on indefinitely until the status-quo changes, ie close browser, change systems. It's not clear why thousands of lurkers are even logged in, I'd have thought a look to the look, feel and visibility could have been handled with cookies.

Eats resources at the server, perhaps impacts licensing costs, ie total users, concurrent users, "security" doesn't seem like a good one, this isn't a bank portal, the user is authenticated in relationship to a single browser and IP instance.. should be readily apparent if those things have changed.

The metrics for those online don't seem to match the volume of questions, or answers.
