What is the difference between IIS2MDC and LIS2MDL?

Based on the datasheets I can not figure out the difference between the IIS2MDC and LIS2MDL. I am looking for an e-compass for navigation.

Load the datasheets for both and compare them carefully.

I printed the datasheets and took the time to compare them. Below are the differences I found:

Digital high/low-inputlevel are 0.1V higher for the IIS2MDC compared to the LIS2MDL (Table 5)
IIS2MDC has no 4-wire SPI, the LIS2MDL does have 4-wire SPI (table 31).

I cannot grasp that these chips coexist based on these minor differences. Therfore I'm afraid I'm missing something.
