Triac BTA40 RD91

Morning everyone,

 

We are planning to control a 30Amps resistive charge using the BTA40 RD91 triac. I have seen that the connector of this faston has the appearance of a male faston connector with a 3.3mm diameter hole.

 

Faston connections are not designed to support 30 Amps, do you know if there are special connector or what kind of connector is used for this 3.3mm diameter hole faston?

It is very surprising for me this diamater (3.3mm), faston male connector usually have a shorter diamater. This is the reason why I think this faston is prepared for a specific connector that may support up to 40 A

Well, as far as the terminals of the RD91 are concerned, they only have a maximum width of 5.2mm due to the limited housing size, so they are suitable for series 205 receptacles, for example, which are in fact designed for significantly lower currents.

In the data sheet you will find that the 40A is the absolute max rating. In addition, TRIACS are not only designed for resistive loads, but can also switch capacitive or inductive loads, which can cause spike currents, especially in the first case. Typically, applications with TRIACs are therefore designed with a lot of headroom in order not to exceed this maximum value under any circumstances.

I have been double checking the BTA40 RD91 datasheet. The width of the terminals are min 6.1mm max 6.5mm with the 3.3mm diameter hole.

Apart from faston connection, is this hole 3.3mm designed to fix for example screw terminals ring type fixed with a screw and nut in case of continuous current of 20-25 Amps?
