If you have this programmer, it was not made by ST and is not guaranteed to work with ST tools, either with or without a USB extension cable.

Thanks. I don't understand English very well, but first of all, thank you for your reply, especially since it was very timely. It also let me know that I can connect with the foreigner, although I can't be sure if it was a foreigner who replied. Anyway, thank you very much. The one I'm using has a different shape; it has two interfaces, one STM32 and one STM8. I'm in China, and the STM32CubeIDE I downloaded seems to have a problem. I can't seem to find the dedicated tools for ST-Link, so I haven't been able to use it. Therefore, I can't be sure if my ST-Link is broken. If it is, the only possibility is that the cable connecting to the computer might be connected incorrectly. I'm a beginner, and the STM32CubeIDE I downloaded also doesn't work. I'm also using this opportunity to test our network connection. Thank you!

Is that one of these you have:

There are different STLINK versions available on the market, two of them are:

ST-LINK-V2:  https://www.st.com/en/development-tools/st-link-v2.html

and ST-LINK-V3: https://www.st.com/en/development-tools/stlink-v3set.html

So could you confirm which one you have? or at least post a photo for it top and bottom of it?

I don't know if this has lost something in translation, but it would be very difficult to get get the USB connection from the ST-Link to the host computer wrong - unless you are making your own USB cables?

If you mean the connection from the ST-Link to the target then, yes - you could possibly do damage to the ST-Link and/or to the target.

This is why using standard cables and headers (rather than loose wires) is a safer option!

As @TDK suggested, beware of fake/clone ST-Links.

A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.

Bad USB cables are out there, often charging cables, lacking data wires or improperly twisted/shielded. This is a bigger problem for USB 2.0 High Speed (480 mbps).

Hubs and Docking Stations can give issues with ST-LINK, I've seen issues with data integrity and failure, as the protocol isn't robust. Perhaps sequencing or retry issues.

I suspect non legitimate ST-LINK can be ignored or bricked.

+ If you have this one as bottom image with Chinese text, it's a ST-LINK clone:
