Six step BLDC Control(X-NUCLEO-IHM11M1)

Hi,
We have been using the X-NUCLEO-IHM11M1 driver to drive a BLDC motor. We were trying to read encoder values from the motor. The driver experienced short circuits on two occasions despite receiving sufficient voltage i.e. 3.5V to operate the BLDC motor and the fault LED pin failed to glow. What might be the possible cause for this short ?
